The fans might know a lot about their favorite celebrities but are they aware of the reasons behind the stage names of those celebrities? Let’s find out.
Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor is a pretty big name. And so, the singer has given herself the stage name Lorde. She said on ABC News Radio in 2014, “I didn’t feel that my birth name was anything special. I always liked the idea of having, like, a one-named alias.” But it is not the only reason as she said, “I basically chose Lorde because I wanted a name that was really strong and had this grandeur to it.” Pretty minimal and powerful, isn’t it?
Snoop Dogg
Calvin Broadus is the real name of Snoop Dogg but his family always preferred calling him Snoopy since he had a resemblance to the animated beagle. This is how Snoop Dogg, the rapper was born with a double ‘g’.
Lady Gaga
In an interview with Jamie Lee Curtis, Stefani Germanotta or better known as Lady Gaga said, “Gaga is this stronger individual part of myself that I discovered being young in New York- loving music, meeting with young artists, working with musicians, with writers, studying the scene, and being involved in the lifestyle.” The singer further said, “I started to call myself Gaga. [It] was the nickname I had at my best.”

Miley Cyrus
Though most fans know her as Miley, which was a nickname for her constant smiling face as a baby; it was made official in 2008. After the chapter of Hannah Montana, she legally changed her name from Destiny Hope to Miley Ray.
Cardi B
In an interview with The Wendy Williams Show, Cardi shared a funny and pretty intoxicating story behind her showbiz moniker. She said, “My sister’s name is Hennessy, so everybody used to be like ‘Bacardi’ to me.” she further added, “Then I shortened it to Cardi B. The ‘B’ stands for whatever, depending on the day…beautiful or bully.” Her real name is Belcalis Almanzar and she made it clear by saying “No one calls me Belcalis except for my family, my mother, and my daddy.”
Post Malone
While Chatting with Jimmy on The Tonight Show, Post Malone also shared the story behind his moniker. He said, “I was, like, 14 and I had started, like, getting into producing and rapping and singing over my own stuff. And then I needed a name for my s—– mixtape, So I ran [Austin Post, my real name] through a random rap name generator and I got Post Malone.”
Travis Scott
Jacques Berman Webster II, a.k.a Travis Scott, revealed the story behind his stage name on the Tonight Show. The rapper said, “My uncle is named Travis and Kid Cudi is, like, one of my favorite artists of all time, and his real name is Scott Mescudi. And my uncle’s friends call him Scott too, so it just kinda worked out like that – my two superheroes.”

Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, also known as Queen Latifah, said that her mother wasn’t really impressed with her stage name and teased her by saying, ‘Queen? I ain’t calling you Queen,’ “. However, the rapper never doubted her moniker even when she turned into a talented actress.
Latifa means “delicate and very kind” in Arabic and she said that she liked the contrast of her name right after the boldness of the word ‘Queen’. Relating to her name she further added, “I think that’s the wonderful thing about a woman. We can be strong but then we can be soft and kind and sensitive.”
Lil Nas X
A lot of celebrities have revealed many secrets on Saturday Night Live, hosted by Jimmy Fallon. Lil Nas X is also one of them and when he was asked about his stage name, Montero said that the name came from his “Internet alias” as well as inspired by other artists.
He said, “When I started doing music, I was like, ‘I want to have fun with this,’ “. talking about fun, he further added, “And every new rapper’s name is Lil, Lil, Lil. ‘What if I was Lil Nas? That’d be funny.’ So I was like, ‘Alright, bet. I’ll be Lil Nas.’ And I added the X later on.”
Melissa Viviane Jefferson, better known as Lizzo, once told James Corden “It’s a teenage nickname,” back in June 2022. She further added, “We did a thing, in Houston, you chop the second half of your name and put an O. I was ‘Lisso’ with two s’s, then everyone said it with a little swang to it so I changed the s’s to z’s and the rest is history.”
