The North Carolina Department of Insurance now has an office in Gastonia, and Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey made an appearance on Monday.
Causey’s appearance was part of a ceremonial grand opening held Monday morning that featured Causey, as well as local and state representatives, but the office has been in use for around a year.
Barry Smith, deputy director of communications, said that the Department of Insurance previously had an office in Charlotte, but they were looking for something that was both centrally located and more accessible. In Charlotte, people had to park elsewhere and walk to their office.
“Here you can come in and walk right in. It’s just a wiser use of taxpayer money,” Smith said.
Speaking to the entire gathering, Causey said that state officials were thrilled to find the building that now houses their new office, which is located at 1422 Burtonwood Drive, near East Franklin Boulevard.
“When our lease was up for renewal, we started looking at some of the outlying areas from Charlotte that might be more easily accessible for people in multiple counties,” Causey said.
“And we came across this space. It was a perfect fit for us.”
Law enforcement that investigate things like arson and insurance fraud will be based there, as well as a variety of other employees.
“We regulate collection agencies, building inspections, all kinds of insurance and a whole host of other issues,” Causey said.
